The brief

Dr Puvan Arul Arumugam is a consultant ENT and head and neck surgeon who treats adults, children, toddlers and babies, for both self-pay and insured patients. People arrive worried about a blocked nose, a hoarse voice or a child’s ear, so the site had to explain those conditions clearly, show who the doctor is, say which insurers are accepted and make calling the clinic easy. It also replaced an older site, so every page Google already knew had to keep its address and its search listing.

What I built

• A custom WordPress theme with no page builder – a calm green and white clinical look, with the one-stop promise, the doctor, the hotline and the insurance button in the first screen.
• Four service pages – ear, nose and sinus, throat and voice, and children’s ENT. Each lists the conditions treated and answers the questions patients ask most, in plain language.
• Procedures and facilities – what is done in the clinic and what is done in the operating theatre, plus the ENT workstations, Karl Storz imaging and Leica microscopes behind the diagnosis.
• The doctor’s profile – qualifications, Malaysian Medical Council registration, awards and publications, so a new patient can see who they will meet.
• 36 insurer pages and a payment guide – a scrolling strip of insurer logos on the homepage, a page for each insurer and a page on payment methods and what to expect at discharge.
• Articles for patients – ten articles in English and Bahasa Malaysia, with the latest three on the homepage, on topics such as glue ear in children, a hoarse voice and nose or sinus surgery.
• Easy to reach – hotline, a floating WhatsApp button and a contact page with an embedded map. A language switcher in the header translates the site automatically.
• Search and AI ready – structured data for the clinic and the doctor (address, opening hours, map coordinates), FAQ markup on the homepage, XML sitemaps and an llms.txt file for AI assistants.
• Fast on a phone – the heavy hero artwork was converted to WebP and the fonts load without blocking. Mobile Lighthouse performance went from 66 to 76, on a simulated slow 4G phone the main image now appears in about 5 seconds instead of 16, and the page is about 1 MB instead of 2.9 MB. Accessibility scores 100.

A worried patient usually starts with a symptom.
